The Hot Dog Castle building was originally built in 1974 and for more than a decade, it was the place to get the best hotdogs this side of the Mississippi. The best part is you could also order your hotdogs with some good ole cowboy chili on them and no beans.
Then around 1985, Hotdog Castle changed, owner Dwight Aston wanted to remodel the building and give a facelift. That's when he also adjusted the menu as well by adding to it variety.
As far back as I can remember, owner, operator of the Hot Dog Castle Dwight Aston also owned and ran another historical restaurant (also with very unique architecture) the Towne Crier Steak House near the Abilene Christian University (ACU) campus.
The original 1974 Hot Dog Castle design and ownership was the brainchild of "Rufus" Eugene Crow, Ken Martin, and Bobby Wolfe.
Aston once told me that if he could move the Hot Dog Castle building closer to both ACU and Hardin Simmons University campuses, the Hot Dog Castle would be the most popular fast-food restaurant in Abilene.
Goodbye Hot Dogs Say Hello To Chicken Tenders No Wait...It's A Pizzaria!
In 1995 Dwight shortened the name to "The Castle" and he remodeled the building again. The Castle also served hamburgers, chicken tenders, and more.
Fast forward to the mid-late 90s early 2000s and massive changes start taking place at "The Castle" building. It was a Rick and Carolyn's Burgers & Fries, then Grinders Sandwiches, Coffee & More, A Pizza restaurant, The Forge then a Heff's Burgers and More.
Most recently it was Bosses Pizza, and the best one to date so far, it's Stonewalls Pizza in that old Hot Dog Castle building. The building is located at 2801 S.1st. I had lunch there and the food's good. The new owners have really breathed new life into that building.
