My first savings account started in a mayonnaise jar. That experience still reminds me why West Texas kids need someone to teach them about saving money.

My Brothers Discovered My Bedroom Bank

In junior high, I tucked away whatever I could: $5, $10, sometimes $20. I wanted a car someday. My two younger brothers wanted candy from the convenience store. Unfortunately, they discovered my bedroom bank.

Mom had a solution. She took me to the credit union at Hill Air Force Base and helped me open a savings account. I was about twelve or thirteen, handing my savings to a stranger and learning that I could deposit money or withdraw it.

Best of all, my brothers couldn’t help themselves anymore!

Three Dollars That Changed My Thinking

I remember my hundred dollars earning about three dollars in interest. My money was making money! Through that Christmas savings account, I bought presents for Mom, Dad, and, yes, my three thieving brothers. Apparently, Christmas brought out my forgiving side.

Helping West Texas Kids Start Saving

My friend Cameron Hall at City National Bank reminded me how important those lessons remain. Our conversation covered youth banking, including checking accounts and debit cards. Parents should ask about eligibility, adult involvement, fees, opening deposits, and any birthday rewards.

City National Bank’s website lists savings accounts that earn interest, plus mobile banking and debit cards among its banking services.

With Christmas approaching, let’s help children choose a goal and save toward it. A bicycle, first car, or college education gives those dollars a purpose. Grandparents, aunts, and uncles can encourage that habit, too.

Thanks, Cameron, for bringing back those memories. I once considered becoming a banker, but talking for a living won out. Teaching kids to save could help their dreams come true, one deposit at a time.
