Chris Young marked the one-year anniversary of the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting on Monday (Oct. 1), by sharing a message of remembrance, and a reminder to live each day to the fullest. "Cherish every day you have," his posting concludes.

Young wasn't on the bill at the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival, but he'd made a last-minute decision to head to Las Vegas, Nev., to see his friends, including his then-tour bossJason Aldeantake the stage. He was watching Aldean's festival-closing set on Oct. 1, 2017, from the side of the stage when a lone gunman opened fire from the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel. His tweets from that night revealed his shock at what was happening.

"So much loss for no reason during something that should have been a happy moment for everyone present," Young reflected on Monday. "I'll never forget having to call my family saying I hoped to see them again."

Fifty-eight people died and more than 800 more were injured during the shooting at the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival; the event is the deadliest non-war mass shooting in the U.S. to date. A few days after the tragedy, on Oct. 4, Young returned to the stage for a show.

"A concert is supposed to be a safe space for people, and it’s supposed to be something to let them have a good time and forget maybe about the world for a little while," Young later told The Boot of his decision to play a concert so soon after. "I don’t want to get ever to a point where anybody would be able to take that away from anyone."
