Get ready to have the most fun summer ever, by becoming a Lifeguard. So, you say you're not trained nor certified to be a Shallow Water Lifeguard, don't worry the City of Abilene will hire you to work for the Adventure Cove while at the same time training you to be a certified Shallow Water Lifeguard.

Sheila Kaiser the Director for the Abilene Adventure Cove says that "there will be three separate training sessions between now and the end of May. Furthermore, classes will be arranged so that those that are attending summer camp early, may be able to return and attend the shallow water lifeguard classes.

All Participants Will Acquire The Knowledge And Skill To Be A Lifeguard

Here's what you will learn in these entry-level classes. All participants will acquire the knowledge and skills to recognize, prevent, and respond to any and all aquatic emergencies in shallow waters up to five feet deep.

Furthermore, you will learn how to provide care for breathing, cardiac emergencies, injuries, and any sudden illnesses until an emergency medical professional can arrive and take over.

Ms. Kieser says "here at the adventure Cove we hire age 16 and up only. Because of federal regulations for the certifications, only 16-year-olds and older can be certified as a lifeguard through the Red Cross.

To Be certified You Must Complete These Prerequisites:

  • Minimum of 16 years of age
  • Swim 100 yards continuously
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
  • Complete a timed event within 50 seconds
  • Swim 20 yards
  • Submerge to a depth of 4 to 5 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
  • Return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.

Keep reading to see if your favorite beach town made the cut.
