Watch Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson and Wheeler Walker Jr.’s NSFW Hinterland Festival Collaboration
Americana up-and-comer Tyler Childers brought out the big guns during his Hinterland Music Festival set on Saturday (Aug. 4) in the form of Sturgill Simpson and Wheeler Walker Jr., and together, the trio gave a rollicking and decidedly NSFW performance. Press play above to watch all the shenanigans unfold.
The three musicians offered up a boozy, honky tonk-style rendition of Walker's "Sit on My Face," filled out by solo guitarwork from Simpson. The audience cracked up at Walker's off-color lyrics as he sang, drink in hand. "Be sure to call into your local radio station and request that one," Childers deadpanned as the song ended.
After the performance of Walker's song, he left the stage and Simpson and Childers continued to jam their way through the set. The Americana giant produced Childers' sophomore LP, Purgatory, an album listed by The Boot as the top Americana album of 2017. Simpson has had a working relationship with Walker as well, introducing him to producer Dave Cobb and helping him establish his distribution deal with Thirty Tigers. All three country acts hail from Kentucky.
Hinterland Festival, which took place on Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 in Saint Charles, Iowa, is a cross-genre music event that featured plenty of Americana and alt-country artists in addition to Simpson, Childers and Walker. Margo Price also performed earlier in the day on Saturday (Aug. 3), along with Blackberry Smoke, Anderson East and many other artists.
