While this recent winter storm has tested my every ability to survive the sub-freezing temperatures and my patience in going from point A to point B. I highly recommend that every one of us slow down and increase our distance between vehicle front to back and side to side. As my boss Frank Pain always says "be a good human."

That said, if you are not able to get warm, there are several places to warm up in Abilene and some surrounding cities. Some of the warming centers are offering overnight stays. Below is a list of 'Warming Centers' and some have extra recommendations.

The Warming Centers are:

Beltway Park officials advise bringing your own drinking water if you have it and no pets are being allowed at this time.

You are allowed an overnight stay however, you must bring your own pillow and blanket. Furthermore, they are not allowing pets at this time. everyone is encouraged to bring your own drinking, if possible. If you are planning on going to the First Baptist Church warming center they ask you call ahead, the number is: (254) 629-3355.

Only Haskell county residents are welcomed at the 'warming center.' The city asks that you leave your pets at home and, that you bring your own snacks and water and practice social distancing.

The City Of Coleman is opening their 'warming center' to provide temporary relief to those who need it most. City officials have changed where the warming center is because at the time of their announcement the Senior Center was without power however, the Coleman Senior Center is heated by gas heaters and electrical power was not needed. However, Coleman City officials have moved the 'warming center' to the Bill Franklin Center. Meals will not be provided and anyone that is coming should bring bedding, medications, drinking water, food and/or snacks and no pets allowed at this time.

The Sheriff's Office said they have opened up the jail for anyone that needs a warm place to stay. If you plan going the Sherriff asks that you bring blankets, toilet paper, medications and anything you might need to make your visit comfortable and no pets please.

  • In Albany, at the First Christian Church located at 201 Walnut Street.

The First Christian Church does have electricity and is providing water, some meals and cots. They are kid friendly and transportation is available if needed. A church member says "if you need transportation here please reach out if you need our help.

As more warming centers continue to open we will be updating this list. So, check back often and share this information with family, friends and neighbors. Please check on those who cannot care for themselves and the elderly.
