Tim McGraw gave a show-stopping performance of Lee Greenwood's hit "God Bless the USA" during his Raleigh, N.C., book tour stop on June 24.

"And I'm proud to be an American / Where at least I know I'm free / And I won't forget the men who died / Who gave that right to me / And I'd gladly stand up next to you / And defend Her still today / 'Cause there ain't no doubt / I love this land / God bless the USA," McGraw sings in the chorus, an instantly recognizable refrain. Greenwood's 1980s hit has soundtracked plenty of patriotic moments since its release over three decades ago.

McGraw recently wrapped up his book tour, which was promoting his new historical book, Songs of America: Patriotism, Protest and the Music That Made a Nation, written alongside Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Jon MeachamThe book analyzes music that was created during politically fraught times in history from both a musician's and a historian's points of view.

During the tour, McGraw spoke with Meacham in a conversation about the book, and performed some of the songs featured in the book, one of which is "God Bless the USA." The book details the soundtracks of different eras, including the American Revolution, the Great Depression and the civil rights movement.

"God Bless the USA" was written by Greenwood in 1983 and released on his album If There's Any Justice. The song was popular after its release but truly gained a following when potential presidents began using the song in campaigns. Beyonce has also covered the song live and released a studio version to benefit 9/11-related charities.

Aside from his new historical book, McGraw will also be releasing a health and lifestyle book, titled Grit & Grace: Train the Mind, Train the Body, Own Your Life, in November. That book will detail the story of his weight loss and move to a healthier lifestyle. It will be available on Nov. 5 at select retailers and online.
