The Avett Brothers Debut ‘Roses and Sacrifice’ on ‘Seth Meyers’ [WATCH]
The Avett Brothers appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Wednesday night (Oct. 25), and they brought an unreleased song with them. Readers can press play above to watch the band perform "Roses and Sacrifice."
The bittersweet lyrics of "Roses and Sacrifice" are set against the band's trademark banjo / guitar / cello harmonies, building up to an anthemic chorus. Seth Avett takes lead on the song, backed up by brother Scott, cellist Joe Kwon and bassist Bob Crawford.
"Words only won't suffice / Roses and sacrifice for you / Darling, don't get me wrong / I've loved for long enough to tell / You're not slowing down / Waiting for anyone anymore / You know just what you want," the first verse opens, spelling out the toll that time and experience can take on love. In true Avett Brothers form, the words paint a picture of hope and sadness simultaneously.
“Spent too much time apart / God bless, we got to start again," they sing. "Your heart’s been suffering / I try to hold it every now and then."
The Avett Brothers haven't released new music since their 2016 album True Sadness, but Consequence of Sound reports that they've been performing "Roses and Sacrifice" in recent live shows. As late night host Meyers indicated in his introduction of their performance, the band has a set at the Concert for Hurricane Florence Relief planned for Nov. 13 at Eastern Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. The Avett Brothers also have additional tour dates planned throughout the fall and into next year; for more information, visit their website.
