Luke Combs Teases Tender New Track, ‘Better Together’ [LISTEN]
Luke Combs' promise to share snippets and live cuts of unrecorded material came true again on July 4, with a 44-second acoustic clip of a song titled "Better Together."
While his prior big reveal "1,2 Many" was simply a drinking song with lyrics as unsubtle as those from Tom T. Hall's "I Like Beer" and ZZ Top's "Legs," this selection finds Combs waxing poetic in his usual, husky drawl.
"Some things just go better together and probably always will," sings Combs. "A cup of coffee and a sunrise / Sunday drives and time to kill / What's the point of this ol' guitar, if it ain't got no strings? / Or pourin' your heart into a song that you ain't gonna sing / It's a match up in Heaven, like good ol' boys and beer / and me, as long as you're here."
As listeners of country radio and curated Spotify playlists could attest without the benefit of his two recent reveals, Combs, like John Michael Montgomery before him, can fluctuate between rowdy party songs and tender-hearted material without compromising hit-making potential.
Best of all, Combs should have more surprises in store for his Twitter followers. In an earlier tweet, he teased the release of a series of new songs, presumably as live video captured by his crew or fans: “Cool if I post a clip of an unreleased song each Thurs. at 4PM EDT starting tomorrow for the next 5 weeks or so?!,” Combs asked rhetorically. “Possible a few of y'all will have already heard some of the songs, but added a few more people to this crazy ride we're on recently so I want to share with everyone!”
The songs add to a busy summer for Combs, the next member of the Grand Ole Opry and the first country star in 60 years to simultaneously chart five of Billboard's top 25 country singles.
