Country superstar Kacey Musgraves made a trip back to her home state of Texas for 2019 RodeoHouston on Monday evening (Feb. 25), and one of the songs she performed during her set was a particularly exciting surprise for longtime fans of the event. Musgraves offered her own rendition of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez's 1992 hit, "Como La Flor." Press play above to watch!

As she performed, one particularly special fan captured the moment from the audience: Quintanilla-Pérez's sister, fellow artist Suzette Quintanilla, posted video of the cover on Instagram, explaining how much the tribute meant to her.

"Awww this makes me wanna shed a tear! Takes me back," Quintanilla writes. "A big big thank you to [Musgraves] for the love at the Houston Rodeo tonight with that SELENA Y LOS DINOS Jam!"

Quintanilla-Pérez was a superstar singer and songwriter known as the Queen of Tejano music. One of the most influential Latin artists in history, she helped bring the genre to mainstream acclaim, and also had a prolific career as an actor, spokesperson, philanthropist and more before she was murdered at the age of 23. Like Musgraves, she was a native Texan.

Musgraves responded to Quintanilla's post of her performance, saying "Suze! Gracias x a million. The utmost respect to you, your sister and the music y'all created."

The country star went on to explain her personal connection to Quintanilla-Pérez's music. She added that it was particularly important to her to offer tribute to the icon on the day before the 24th anniversary of her final RodeoHouston performance, which took place on Feb. 26, 1995.

"I first learned 'Como La Flor' to sing in my fifth grade talent show (lol) and it was a dream to be able to pay homage tonight to one of the greatest innovators and queens of all time," Musgraves adds. "Especially the day before the anniversary. In my home state."
