There's a special type of friendship in Lubbock that doesn't require you to leave home, go to parties, see movies, or really even "hang out" at all.

You run into a good pal at the grocery store, say hello, and make plans to hang out with one another..

The catch?

You never actually do.

I know.

The Lubbock Art of Saying “We Should Hang Out” and Never Doing It

The phrases:

"We should totally hang out!"

"Next weekend would be awesome!"

and

"Can't wait!"

Could be some of the final words you ever hear from friends you've known a billion years.

And listen...

It has nothing to do with not liking someone.

You might even genuinely want to get together for a round of golf or a wine and canvas night, but it just doesn't happen. You're busy. You've got a dozen kids. You work long hours. The Lubbock Art of Pretending You Didn’t See Someone You Know

And, guess what?

Nobody complains.

Nobody get's their feelings hurt.

Nobody even really cares.

The next time it happens, you'll say something like,

"We REALLY have to hang out this time! I mean REALLY!"

No.

No, you dont.

You don't mean REALLY.

You know that deep down, you're not going to see them until the next funeral of a mutual pal you also meant to hang out with before it was too late, and on and on forever, amen.

I said all of that to say this:

Lubbock friendships are easy to maintain.

We pick up where we left off.

We don't fuss when someone misses an event.

But you never know when it might REALLY be your last time to see your best homies.

Maybe we should all make a pact to keep our promises better,

In fact, why don't we get together next week over coffee and talk about it!

Scratch that.

Let's go for the week after...

Wait...on second thought...

I think I might have something to do that day...
