I know kids do not want to hear this but there is less than a week until school starts in Abilene. As a parent, I know this is a time to rejoice. Unfortunately, the reality of the cost of school supplies sets in as well. Luckily, Texas is set to have another tax-free weekend.

According to Texas Comptroller, this special tax holiday will happen from August 11th through August 13th, literally days away from school starting in Abilene on August 16th. Perfect timing, right?

The Comptroller encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses while saving money on tax-free purchases of most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) during the annual Tax-Free weekend. Qualifying items can be purchased tax-free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases, you do not need to give the seller an exemption certificate to buy qualifying items tax-free.(Texas Comptroller)

What can you buy tax-free during that time?

There are a ton of things that qualify for you to buy tax-free including school supplies, clothing, footwear, backpacks, facemasks, and more. You can also take advantage of the tax-free weekend by paying off layaways, special orders, rainchecks, and school supplies purchased using a business account.

This year’s sales tax holiday begins Friday, Aug. 11, and goes through midnight Sunday, Aug. 13.

In addition to being able to buy in-store, you'll be able to shop online, by phone, custom order, and any other means. Just remember, delivery fees, shipping, and transportation charges are part of the sale price. For the most affordable places to shop in Abilene, click here.

For instance, clothing is part of the qualifying items if the sales price is under $100. So, say you buy a pair of shoes for $95 and there is a delivery fee of $10. That puts the total price at $105 meaning you won't be able to get those shoes tax-free. Make sense?
