Don’t Let Fun on Texas Lakes End in Tragedy This Labor Day

Labor Day weekend is here, and in Texas that means lakes, boats, and a whole lot of people trying to squeeze the last bit of summer out of the season. But here’s the reality check: every year, too many families don’t make it home because alcohol and boating collided.

According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), mixing booze with boats is still the number one cause of fatal accidents on our lakes. That’s why Game Wardens and the U.S. Coast Guard will be patrolling waters across the state, keeping a close eye on anyone steering under the influence.

Alcohol + Boats = The Deadliest Combination

Assistant Commander Cody Jones with TPWD says it plain and simple: “If you’re operating a boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you’re putting people at risk.” And sadly, holiday weekends are when those risks turn into real tragedies.

Life Jackets Save Lives, But Only If You Wear Them

Another big problem? Not wearing life jackets. Rangers say it’s still the most common violation they see, even though Texas law is crystal clear: every passenger must have a life jacket, and kids under 13 must wear one the whole time.

It may not look “cool,” but here’s what is cool, making it back to the dock safely with your kids, friends, and family.

Wardens Will Be Everywhere This Weekend

From sunrise to sunset, you’ll see wardens on patrol. Their goal isn’t to ruin your good time, it’s to make sure your good time doesn’t end with flashing lights, a hospital run, or worse.

Boating manager Kimberly Sorensen with TPWD puts it best: “Please help us do our job by being prepared and making the right choices.”

The Bottom Line

Holiday weekends on the water should end with fireworks and laughter, not empty chairs at the dinner table. So if you’re heading out this Labor Day: skip the alcohol while driving the boat, wear the life jackets, and bring everyone back safely.
