If you drive the Winters Freeway or South First in Abilene, you’ve probably already noticed it, and if not, you will soon. The Abilene Police Department has officially announced increased traffic enforcement along some of the busiest roads in the Key City, and it’s not just talk, it’s happening right now.

Texas Traffic Enforcement Is Already Underway

As I’m writing this, I’m looking out the window of the radio station on South First Street, and sure enough, another vehicle just got pulled over. That makes multiple stops I’ve personally seen in just a short amount of time.

According to APD, this increased enforcement will continue through the rest of 2026, focusing heavily on the Winters Freeway (US 83/84), South First corridor, and Buffalo Gap Road. All of which are also maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and are classified as U.S. Highways.

So, when I recently spoke with Sergeant Mark Couch with the Texas Department of Public Safety, he made it clear that speeding and distracted driving are still two of the biggest reasons crashes are happening across Texas, and down these three corridors. That’s exactly why both troopers and officers are trying to monitor these roads.

This effort is being supported by a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to improve driver behavior and make these high-traffic areas safer.

Why These Roads Are Being Targeted

If you’ve driven those stretches lately, you already know that traffic has picked up. Between construction, gravel trucks, concrete haulers, and everyday commuters, these roads are seeing more congestion and more risky driving situations.

That’s exactly why officers are focusing on:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Seatbelt violations
  • Child restraint compliance
  • Driving while intoxicated
  • A Reminder For Texas Drivers

APD is urging drivers to slow down and stay alert, especially in these heavily traveled areas. And from what I’m seeing firsthand, they’re not easing into this. They’re already out there making stops.

What This Means for Texas Drivers

This isn’t one of those “we might start enforcing” situations, this is happening right now. If you’re traveling on the Winters Freeway or South First Street, it’s a good time to double-check your speed and put the phone down.

Because out here in Abilene, they’re watching.
