Remembering Harold Christian: The Man Who Fed Abilene’s Soul with BBQ and Song

I remember an old George Carlin comedy bit about rules we all had to follow growing up. One rule that stuck with me was: “No singing at the table during dinner.” That was definitely not the case at one of my all-time favorite restaurants in Abilene, Harold's Pit Bar-B-Q.

Harold's Pit Bar-B-Q may no longer be around, but the memories of Harold Christian’s legendary barbecue, his love for people, local sports, and his passion for song live on. While you didn’t have to sing for your supper, you did have to sing along, whether you wanted to or not.about.

A Man of Faith, Food, and Fellowship

Harold Christian was more than just a pitmaster. He was a man of deep faith, a passionate supporter of Abilene Christian University (ACU) and our local public school sports, and a friend to military personnel and anyone who walked through his doors. And, of course, he loved to sing. It didn’t matter if you were in a bad mood stepping into Harold’s restaurant meant you’d leave feeling better, with a belly full of barbecue and a song stuck in your head. Harold made sure of it.

Music, BBQ, and Life Lessons

At Harold’s, faith and food went hand in hand. Every song he sang was faith-based, and if you didn’t know the words, no problem, Harold would shout them out for you. If you were looking for a quiet place to eat, Harold’s was not the place, because it was loud and lively.

Harold didn’t just entertain, he inspired. He used music to bring people together, teaching lessons about diversity, kindness, and love. If he had your attention, he made sure to use it for good.

From Barbecue Legend to the Big Screen

Harold Christian’s impact on Abilene was so great that his story was even brought to the attention on the big screen. He was portrayed by Academy Award-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne in the movie "Under the Stadium Lights." For those who ever had the privilege of dining at Harold’s Pit Bar-B-Q, these videos might bring back fond memories. I’ll admit, watching them had my eyes watering, remembering Harold and the joy he spread.

A Lasting Legacy

Harold Christian was revered by everyone who met him. Visitors from all over made it a point to stop by Harold’s Pit Bar-B-Q, it was a bucket list destination. But more than that, Harold was the kind of man we need more of today. He had an unwavering faith in God, in his community, and in people. Just being around him made me want to be a better person, a better human.

I miss him greatly, Harold Don Christian passed away in April 3, 2016 at age 71. Our community, and honestly, our country, could use someone like Harold Christian right now. His restaurant may be empty now, but his faith, music, and love for people still echo in the hearts of those who knew him. I miss you Harold.
