Abilene Through My Eyes: Living, Loving, and Weathering the Big Country

As a proud resident of Abilene, Texas, I’ve called the Key City home since the early 1970s. Having lived here through decades of blazing summers, unpredictable storms, and the rare but memorable snow days, I can confidently say, “I love to live in Abilene, and I live to love in Abilene.” It’s the most exciting city in Texas. With many folks moving to the Big Country from out of state, I often get asked questions about our weather, history, and why Abilene is such a unique place to call home. Here are some of my favorite (and often surprising) answers to share.

Q: What’s the weather like in Abilene during the winter?

Winters in Abilene are short, cold, dry, and windy. It’s not uncommon to experience freezing temperatures, sleet, and even snow, yes, snow.

While snowfall is rare, when it does happen, it’s a sight to behold. The city virtually shuts down for even an inch or two of accumulation, which might sound amusing, but it’s a testament to how rare these events are. And during winters like this, with wind chills in the teens and icy roads, it’s a good time to cozy up, enjoy Abilene’s beautiful sunsets, and savor a warm bowl of chili. Source: WeatherSource.com

Q: How much snow does Abilene usually get?

Typically, we see snow only once or twice a year, with little accumulation. However, exceptions like the snowstorms of 2021 and 2022 brought us unexpected “SnowPocalypse” that left lasting memories (and many hilarious stories of Texans trying to navigate icy roads). When the snow comes, it’s a magical moment for Abilenians of all ages, just don’t forget to stock up on hot cocoa beforehand. Source: WeatherSoutcr.com

Q: What does the name “Abilene” mean?

Abilene has biblical roots, derived from a region of the Holy Land mentioned in scripture. The name comes from the Hebrew word meaning “grass,” which is fitting when you think about the grassy plains surrounding our city. Our Abilene was named after Abilene, Kansas, as a nod to its cowboy heritage. Source: Niche.com

Q: Why is Abilene called ‘The Big Country’?

In the 1930s and ‘40s, Abilene became the hub for commerce, retail, and transportation for a sprawling 19-county area. Locals affectionately started calling it “The Big Country,” highlighting its wide-open spaces and far-reaching influence. Today, it’s sometimes referred to as the “Texas Midwest,” but for us locals, it will always be The Big Country. SourceAbilene Texas Wikipedia

Q: Why is Abilene known as the Key City?

Abilene’s strategic location makes it the “key” to the success of this region. It’s a central hub pulling a workforce from over a dozen surrounding counties. Dyess Air Force Base, the largest employer in the area, further cements Abilene’s reputation as a crucial cornerstone of West Texas. Source: I Fly Abi.com

Q: What’s Abilene’s air quality like?

One thing you’ll love about Abilene is our clean, fresh air. Whether it’s the clear blue skies, stunning sunrises, or our iconic West Texas sunsets, you’ll quickly understand why so many of us feel blessed to live here. Even with a rapidly growing economy and new businesses popping up, Abilene maintains its small-town charm and high quality of life. Source: Niche.com

Q: Is Abilene a good place to live?

Absolutely, Abilene offers a suburban feel, affordable living, and plenty of parks for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s an ideal place to raise a family, with great schools and a welcoming community. Plus, with a commute time averaging only 7-10 minutes, you’ll have more time to enjoy all the city has to offer. Source: Forbes Magazine

Q: Why should I move to Abilene, Texas?

Abilene is a city that celebrates culture, history, and community. From events like the Western Heritage Classic and the West Texas Fair & Rodeo to museums, live music venues, and scenic parks, there’s always something to do. Combine this with a low cost of living, friendly neighbors, and our unbeatable weather (well, except for the occasional snowstorm), and it’s easy to see why so many people are making Abilene their home. Source: Abilene Chamber

My Favorite Thing About Abilene

As I always say, “I love to live in Abilene, and I live to love in Abilene.” No matter the weather, the season, or the question, this city’s charm, history, and resilience never fail to inspire me to want to be a better Texan, a better citizen, a better human. If you’re curious about life in the Big Country, just remember, Abilene is more than a city, it’s a community, a family, and, for me, the most exciting place in the Lone Star State .
