Why Abilene Texas Cruise Night Still Means So Much to Me

If you grew up in Abilene, Texas, during the 1970s and ’80s, there’s a good chance you remember what happened when the sun went down on a Friday or Saturday night. We cruised North First Street. Furthermore, I didn’t just watch those days. I lived them.

Camaros, a Monte Carlo and the Kmart Parking Lot

I cruised Abilene in both a 1972 Camaro and a 1968 Camaro, and I still kick myself for selling those cars.

Why? Chevrolet came out with what I thought was the coolest thing I’d ever seen: the 1977 Monte Carlo.

I was an Abilene High School kid. I wanted that big Monte Carlo with the little opera windows.

I’d pull into the old Kmart parking lot, occasionally show off a little too much by doing donut burnouts in the Kmart parking lot, and then I'd hear the guys hollering, “Settle down, Rudy!” But after I got the Monte Carlo, I was done doing donut burnouts, they were a thing of the past.

We’d hit Sonic for something to drink and nibble on, cruise North First, circle Mack Eplen’s Drive-a-teria, and admire everybody else’s rides.

Mustang, Camaro, GTO or Barracuda?

Eventually somebody would say, “My car is faster than yours.”

The arguments were Camaro versus Mustang, GTO, Barracuda, Trans Am, and whatever else somebody had spent all week polishing.

Sometimes those challenges led young people, including us, to make decisions on public streets that I would never recommend today. We thought we were invincible. Looking back, I’m thankful we survived some of those youthful decisions.

Cruise It, Don’t Race It

That is not what Cruise Night is about today.

Cruise Night is about enjoying the cars, the memories, and each other. No speeding. No burnouts. No fishtailing. No rolling coal. Obey the traffic laws and respect the officers helping keep everyone safe.

And remember, many of the cars you’ll see are valuable classics that owners have spent years restoring, maintaining, and protecting. Nobody wants to see one of these beautiful machines damaged because somebody decided to fool around.

Bring the horsepower. Leave the horseplay somewhere else.

Cruise Night Has Always Been About Safety Too

KEAN 105 started Cruise Night more than four decades ago to bring the Abilene community together while raising money for Safety City.

Safety City is a miniature city where elementary and intermediate school students can learn automotive safety, pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, and much more while operating small motorized vehicles in a controlled environment.

Cruise Night also helped raise money for Rodney the Robot, another familiar part of local safety education.

That is one reason the Abilene Police Department has been part of Cruise Night for decades. Their involvement isn’t something new. Safety has always been part of what this event was designed to support.

Years later, as KEAN 105 became part of a larger family of local radio stations, Rock 108, 92.5 The Ranch, and KOOL FM 100.7 joined in celebrating a tradition that had already become part of Abilene and Big Country history.

For a Few Hours, I’m That Kid Again

When those classic cars roll down North First, I’m not thinking about how many years have passed.

For a little while, I’m that Abilene High kid again, cruising in a Camaro or that big Monte Carlo, stopping at Sonic and hanging out with friends at Kmart.

Yep. Those were the days.

And one final plea from me: the Abilene Police Department will be there, as they have been for decades, helping make sure everybody is having safe fun.

Please, I’m begging our listeners: don’t speed, don't do burnouts, no rolling coal, and don’t do anything crazy that could hurt somebody, damage one of these incredible vehicles, or ruin Cruise Night for everybody else.

Let’s cruise, admire each other’s cars, wave at one another, and make some more great Abilene memories.

Here’s When We Cruise in 2026

Abilene Cruise Night returns Saturday, October 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. along the traditional North First Street cruise route in Abilene.

But our day starts even earlier. We’ll be in Clyde, Texas, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. for the Keepers Car Club Car Show before heading back to Abilene for Cruise Night.

So shine up that classic, grab the lawn chairs, and make a day of it. Check out the cars in Clyde, then come cruise North First with us that evening.

And remember, the Abilene Police Department will be there, as they have been for decades, helping everyone enjoy Cruise Night safely.
