H-E-B President Who Starred in Popular Commercials Will Retire in 2022
Scott McClelland, the president of the iconic Texan grocery store chain H-E-B's food and drug division, announced he will retire from the role at the end of 2022. McClelland is also known for his role as the "H-E-B Guy" in a series of the store's television commercials.
McClelland's career with H-E-B began overseeing store operations in Central Texas, then as the Chief Merchandising Officer for the company and the president of H-E-B's Houston operations.
Following his retirement, McClelland will continue to advise H-E-B as it expands its branding into the Dallas metroplex area in the coming year.
That longtime Houston connection likely landed McClelland the unusual role of TV commercial star for H-E-B; the company ran a series of ads that partnered with professional athletes and the Houston Texans and Houston Astros.
"Sorry doesn't take the pain away, J.J."
As the "H-E-B Guy", McClelland often played the logical-but-still-funny foil to the giant J.J. Watts of the Houston Texans. The two played recurring roles as neighbors in some of H-E-B's most memorable advertising.
McClelland front local advertising for H-E-B in the Houston area, like the Kickoff Freshness spot from 2014 below. It touches on the grocery chain's open commitment to locally-sourced produce, fresh baked goods, and competitive pricing.

Based in San Antonio, Texas, H-E-B has over 300 stores throughout the U.S. and northeast Mexico. Its 2019 revenue surpassed $31 billion dollars, and the company is known for maintaining a uniquely Texan brand identity. H-E-B gained notriety for its charity work and disaster relief efforts during Hurricane Harvey in 2017, and during the historic winter freeze that paralyzed the state of Texas in February of 2021.
