Chris Stapleton Takes Home Male Vocalist of the Year at 2018 CMA Awards
The artist was the most-nominated at this year’s ceremony with seven nods total, taking home the trophy for Song of the Year and Single of the Year (both for “Broken Halos”) in addition to Male Vocalist.
Stapleton brought his trademark bashfulness to his acceptance speech, noting in the understatement of the year, “I try really hard to be a good singer,” before going on to thank his children for "putting up with" him being gone so often and apologizing for “not being as good of a dad as I would always like to."
“You share me with all these people, and I appreciate it,” he told his four children and soon-to-be fifth child.
He also thanked his ever-supportive wife, Morgane, who was in the audience, for always “helping me find the right thing to be and the right thing to do.”
Stapleton also performed one of the show-stopping moments of the night alongside Morgane, Maren Morris, Marty Stuart and Mavis Staples, bringing down the house with their collaboration on a medley of Stapleton’s “Friendship” and the Staple Singers’ classic “I’ll Take You There.”
