Brantley Gilbert, Colt Ford, Lukas + Willie Nelson’s ‘Welcome to Hazeville’ Is a 4/20 Anthem [LISTEN]
For those looking for the perfect soundtrack for their ... uh, "celebrations" on Saturday (April 20), Brantley Gilbert, Colt Ford, Lukas Nelson and Willie Nelson have come together for a brand-new song, "Welcome to Hazeville." Readers can press play above to listen to the rap-influenced track.
In "Welcome to Hazeville," Gilbert, Ford and their co-writers Rodney Clawson and Andrew DeRoberts envision a metaphorical stoner's paradise, backed by a drum loop, guitar and a chorus of "whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh"s. "Everybody needs a spot to put the world on fade," Gilbert sings. "I know a place / And I know the way."
Ford adds a rap verse, while the elder Nelson offers the final "Welcome to Hazeville" -- his only solo line on the song, which was produced by Mike Elizondo. Gilbert says he was "honored" to have the Nelsons join in "because, you know, these are all people who live what the song is about.”
Illustrator and animator Gavin Schlerf, along with director Chris Gregorie and producer Brittany Hughes, created a Scooby Doo-inspired music video for "Welcome to Hazeville." Gilbert says he and his co-conspirators all recognize the inherent humor in the song, "so when I saw what they were thinking, I was like ‘That’s cool.’ I mean, who doesn’t like Scooby-Doo and Shaggy?"
Gilbert toured with the Nelsons, Lee Brice, Craig Campbell and Jamey Johnson in 2011, on Willie Nelson's Country Throwdown Tour. Lukas Nelson says the experience was "really fun," and that he "made a lot of good friends on that tour" (quote via Digital Journal).
Gilbert is currently at work on a new album, the release details for which have yet to be announced. He's previously released the song "Not Like Us" and the project's first single, "What Happens in a Small Town," a duet with Lindsay Ell.
