New York Steakhouse Fights ‘Texas Strip’ Name in $1M Lawsuit
Looks like things are heating up in the kitchen! After the announcement that Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick made concerning changing the name of the New York Strip to the Texas Strip, it doesn't seem like our friends up in New York are totally okay with that.
A couple of New York restaurants are firing back at Patrick's rebranding, and it's not sounding cheap. According to 6 News in Albany, the owner of the War Room Tavern in Albany, Todd Shapiro, is planning to file a lawsuit against the entire state of Texas for $1 million alleging that the rebranding of the New York Strip “infringes upon New York’s cultural heritage and poses economic harm to businesses that rely on the recognition and popularity of the New York strip steak.”
Shapiro plans to file the lawsuit in the coming weeks, seeking to prevent the State of Texas from implementing the proposed name change.
As for the steakhouse that is said to be responsible for naming the cut of beef the "New York Strip", Delmonico's? The owner, Dennis Turcinovic tells NBC New York:
I think it's ridiculous. It's the New York strip. It will always be the New York strip. And good luck trying to change that.
Why does Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick Want to Change it to Texas Strip?
In a lengthy X post, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick shared some facts about cattle in Texas and called for a name change to the New York Strip- changing it to Texas Strip, and he's taking this fight straight to the Texas Senate.
If approved, the change would be slowly, starting in Texas restaurants and grocery stores, and eventually hoping it will catch on across the globe.
