Tax season is officially open for us Texans, and we're all hoping to see those big refunds roll in sooner rather than later.

As we sit through the painstaking process of doing our taxes, and then the long wait to see our refund hit our account, some Texans could find themselves in for a nice little surprise.

No, I'm not talking about a surprise visit from the IRS. That's not exactly something any of us want. I'm talking about some extra money you weren't planning on.

WHY WOULD I BE GETTING MONEY

According to the IRS, at least one million people didn't claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax return, AKA, stimulus check.

If you were one of those people, you will end up receiving a surprise $1,400 you weren't planning on getting.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I CLAIMED IT

There are a couple of different ways you can find out. One is by opening up your 2021 tax return and seeing if you have an amount listed on line 30 of the return, labeled "Recovery rebate credit".

If you see a zero in that spot, it means you didn't claim the credit and you'll be getting the $1,400 payment at some point this week.

The IRS is also sending out letters to those who will be receiving this payment so you won't be surprised to find an extra $1,400 in your bank account.

HOW WILL I RECEIVE THIS MONEY

Again, two different options when it comes to receiving the funds.

If you had a direct deposit to a bank account on your 2023 tax return, the funds will be electronically deposited into that bank account on file.

If no direct deposit information is available from the 2023 tax return, a paper check will be mailed to the last address on file with the IRS.
