(KNUE-FM) We know that law enforcement officers here in Texas work extremely hard to keep our communities safe. They risk their lives on a daily basis, and should be appreciated for all the sacrifices they make. And it’s great to hear that while they are serving and protecting, the Texas Department of Public Safety just let us know they have a new tool to fight crime.

The Texas DPS just released details on the first-ever Nation Drone Detection System that is now available for them to use. If you’re not exactly sure what that is, you’re not alone. But they did describe how this will help them moving forward.

What Is the Drone Detection System?

Texas DPS is the first law enforcement agency in the nation to have this Airborne Counter Unmanned Aircraft System (ACUS). It’s cutting-edge technology mounted on helicopters, that is designed to detect and respond to drones that may interfere or pose a threat to public safety or emergency operations.

How This Technology Keeps Texans Safe

This is a huge win in regards to aerial safety and threat mitigation. This will help protect DPS personnel and the public during missions, disaster response, border operations and criminal patrol flights.

It’s common knowledge that drones are being used more frequently, whether it’s for food delivery or firework shows. But this also means criminals are using these devices for illegal activities as well.

This new technology is already installed on one DPS helicopter; Specialized officers underwent training to operate the technology. They’ll be responsible for monitoring the data while in flight.

Texas Leading the Way in Law Enforcement Innovation

This technology will alert officers of drone activity while airborne; it will also provide information of any real-time threats in the area. It’s going to give pin-point accuracy as to where any drone is located and where the operator is located.

This is a huge step in making sure DPS officers and Texas citizens stay safe.
