The 2025 Independence Day holiday is almost here, and with it comes fireworks, road trips, family gatherings, and unfortunately, a spike in dangerous driving. From Wednesday, July 3rd through 6 a.m. Sunday, July 6th, expect increased law enforcement all across West Texas, including city streets, county roads, and state highways.

This year, I had Trooper Sergeant Marc Couch of the Texas Department of Public Safety in my studio, as he does every year, to remind all of us about what officers are focusing on during this high-risk holiday weekend.

Let’s break down the top five violations Texas law enforcement will be targeting, straight from the source. Listen to the interview below.

1. Driving Under the Influence

Whether it’s alcohol, drugs, or extreme fatigue, if you're behind the wheel and impaired, you're a danger to everyone. Troopers will be running DWI patrols and setting up checkpoints across Texas.

“Designate before you celebrate,” Trooper Couch reminded us. Plan ahead and use a sober driver, it’s that simple.

2. Distracted Driving

Texting, scrolling, eating, fiddling with GPS, or trying to snap a firework selfie while driving, all of it is illegal and deadly. DPS is cracking down hard on any distracted behavior behind the wheel.

3. No Seatbelts (Including Passengers)

Click it or ticket is still very real in 2025. That means everyone in the vehicle needs to be buckled up, front seat or back, kids especially. Dont give officers an easy reason to pull you over.

4. Speeding in All Zones

Trooper vehicles are equipped with radar tech that can detect speeders in all directions, even before you see them. Slow down, especially in rural areas, construction zones, and neighborhoods where kids are playing.

5. Aggressive Driving and Road Rage

Swerving, tailgating, brake-checking, and hostile behavior behind the wheel won’t be tolerated. “Be a Texan, not a terror,” as Trooper Couch put it. Stay cool and courteous out there.

Freedom Comes with Responsibility

Let’s not forget what this holiday is really about. Independence Day is a celebration of our freedom, and with that freedom comes responsibility, to ourselves, our passengers, and our fellow Texans.

Law enforcement won’t be taking time off this weekend. In fact, they’re stepping up patrols to keep you safe. So return the favor, drive smart, buckle up, and stay sober.

Final Word From the Studio

I’ve been doing this a long time, and I can tell you, every crash Trooper Couch mentioned was preventable. Every family affected by a crash this weekend will wish someone had made a better choice.

Have a safe and joyful Fourth of July. Let’s all make it to July 7th with memories, not regrets.
