As a son, husband, and son-in-law, I’ve learned over the last 50 years that when it comes to a mom’s favorite places to dine on her day, you better get it right. Trust me, over the decades I’ve made some mistakes, but I've also taken a lot of notes.

First and foremost: Don't screw this up! Make reservations early, dress nicely, and be on your best behavior. That said, here are the places all the special ladies in my life loved to dine at. (And yes, sometimes it meant two dinner dates in one day, brunch and supper.)

Know Mom’s Favorite Types of Restaurants

My mother, God bless her, was a big fan of buffets. That made it pretty easy, there aren't many to choose from in town. My wife and mother-in-law, though? A whole different ballgame.

For them, it was always about a feeling:

"What are you feeling like having for dinner, dear?"
And my mother-in-law? No guessing. It was always, "We’re eating Mexican food, you know where."

Mom’s Go-To Spots in Abilene

Let’s dive into some real Mother's Day favorites.

My mother-in-law’s choice was simple: Mexican food, no questions asked. Casa Herrera and Northside Oscar’s were her go-to spots. No arguments, just sign the ticket and enjoy.

My mother leaned toward cafeterias and buffets. When the local cafeterias started shutting down, we shifted over to Golden Corral. Unless, of course, she was in the mood for steak or barbecue, then I knew to brace myself for a full meal, with her ordering all her favorites and me happily picking up the tab.

My Wife’s Favorite Places (and Dishes)

My wife’s favorites change depending on her mood. We’ve even made special trips to Fort Worth just so she can enjoy her favorite Eggs Benedict at Ol' South Pancake House. (And trust me, it’s worth the drive.)

No matter where you choose to take Mom, Mother’s Day is about showing appreciation, love, and gratitude for everything she’s done. Whether she’s craving Mexican food, barbecue, a buffet feast, or breakfast for dinner, taking the time to treat her to a great meal means more than you’ll ever know. After all, it’s the memories made around the table that last forever.

"I know I would give anything for just one more meal with my mom and mother-in-law."

My Closing Thoughts

This Mother’s Day, don’t just feed her stomach, feed her heart. A good meal, a warm hug, and your time are the real gifts she’ll treasure most.
