August 7th marks a significant day in American history known as Purple Hearts Day, a time to honor and recognize the brave men and women who have been wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military. For me, this day carries profound personal significance. Born with one arm, I always dreamed of serving my country, but was heartbroken to learn I could not join the American military. Despite this, nearly all the men in my family have served our nation with distinction.

The Purple Heart medal, originally established by General George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, is one of the most respected and oldest military decorations still awarded today. My family’s connection to this legacy runs deep. My uncle, a WWII veteran, received a purple Heart and the Medal of Honor and went on to become a state representative. My brother retired from the Air Force, and my brother-in-law proudly wears two Purple Heart medals and a Bronze Star Medal. Two of my three sons have served, with one still active in the US Navy today.

Purple Hearts Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our service members and the enduring spirit of those who have fought for our nation's freedom. My nephew Marcus served in the US Army during the conflicts in the Middle East and was tragically killed. He too received the Purple Heart, which was given to his mother at his service. This day is a clear-cut reminder of the ultimate sacrifice he and so many others have made.

For me, honoring this day is a way to pay tribute to my family members and all others who have given their all. It’s a way to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Whether through a moment of silence, participating in community events, or simply reaching out to a veteran, Purple Hearts Day is a time to acknowledge the profound debt we owe to those who have given so much.

Let us take this day to honor their legacy and reaffirm our commitment to supporting our veterans and their families. May God bless America.
