With heavy hearts, the Abilene Zoo has announced the tragic passing of one of its beloved giraffes. Earlier this week, it was reported that Zahara, the baby giraffe, had tragically passed away. Zahara was the newest member of the Abilene giraffe family, born on July 20th.

A Devastating Loss for the Zoo and Community

When I first heard the news of Zahara’s passing, my heart broke. I then thought about our amazing zoo family and how devastated they must be. The Abilene Zoo is home to one of the finest teams, who love and care for these animals with all their heart and soul. It’s important to remember that while we are grieving, the zoo staff is also processing this loss as they prepare for their busiest season.

A Year of Heartache for the Abilene Zoo

This year has been especially difficult for the Abilene Zoo team. Earlier this year, they reported the sudden passing of Makena, a two-year-old giraffe, who died unexpectedly from natural causes on April 8th, 2024. Now, just a few months later, they are faced with another tragedy, as baby Zahara passed away on Wednesday, October 2nd.

The Circumstances Around Zahara’s Passing

The Abilene Zoo announced that Zahara’s death followed a devastating leg fracture. The cause of the injury remains unknown. Despite the best efforts of the zoo’s professional medical team, Zahara passed away while receiving emergency care.

"We are devastated by this tragic loss," said Robert Trejo, General Curator. "Zahara brought immense joy to our zoo family and the community. We appreciate the overwhelming support and love shown for Zahara since her birth, and our hearts go out to everyone who felt a connection to her, especially her primary zookeepers."

Moving Forward and Supporting the Zoo

As we mourn Zahara, we are reminded of the challenges of caring for such magnificent animals. The zoo will continue to monitor the remaining members of the giraffe herd, ensuring their safety and well-being. The Abilene Zoo staff extends their gratitude to the public for their understanding during this difficult time and for the outpouring of support for the team and the animals they love.

A Thank You to the Awesome Abilene Zoo Team

I believe it’s essential that we all thank every member of the Abilene Zoo team for their hard work and for always providing excellent care to the animals, who are also considered family. Their passion and dedication are evident every time I visit. During my live broadcast at Rhino Days, I couldn’t say “thank you” enough to the zoo staff, and I’ll say it again here. Thank you, Mr. Pottebaum, and your wonderful staff, for all the love, care, and support you provide to the animals and our West Texas community.

Looking Ahead At Upcoming Zoo Events

As we process this loss, let’s continue supporting the zoo and its upcoming events, such as "Boo at the Zoo" and "Christmas at the Zoo." I, for one, plan to be there when Santa Claus and the reindeer come to visit. I hope to see you at the Abilene Zoo, as we come together to celebrate the incredible animals and people that make it so special.
