Abilene Community Band Returns with a Spectacular Fall Concert

Abilene music lovers, mark your calendars! The Abilene Community Band is once again bringing its incredible talent to the historic Paramount Theatre for its annual Fall Concert. This year's performance will take place on Tuesday, October 8th, 2024, at 7:30 PM. As always, this beloved event is completely free, but donations are graciously accepted to support this long-standing community treasure. Arrive early, though, because the best seats tend to fill up quickly at this cherished local event.

The Abilene Community Band, founded on July 4th, 1976, has delighted audiences for decades. Under the direction of Joe Stevens, a name synonymous with the city’s rich band history, the band continues to embody a sense of community and musical excellence.

Meet the Maestro: Joe Stevens' Legacy in Abilene Music

Stevens, a retired Abilene Independent School District Band Director, has led the band for many years, guiding them through various musical genres that always promise to entertain. Joe, who was once my band director at Mann Junior High, has a reputation for bringing innovation to each performance, drawing on his vast experience in music education. Throughout his career, he’s directed bands at Lee Elementary, Abilene High, and Cooper High, among others.

This year's concert is set to be particularly special, with a lineup that will take audiences on a musical journey through history, culture, and emotion. Joe Stevens gave me a sneak peek into some of the featured pieces, and let me tell you—it’s going to be a night to remember.

Honoring Texas and Beyond Through Music

One of the highlights will be a John Phillip Sousa piece called “The Daughters of Texas”, a tribute to Texas Women’s University that showcases Sousa's distinctive style of patriotic and rousing compositions. If you’re a fan of Western Americana, you’ll love the next piece, inspired by the breathtaking landscape of Sedona, Arizona. The band will also transport you to the Adirondack Festival in New York with a stunning arrangement that evokes the spirit of this famous northeastern region.

And for fans of classic cinema, the concert will feature music from a John Wayne film, with pieces inspired by Irish folk songs like “The Quiet Man.” These melodies will whisk you away to the green hills of Ireland, a perfect balance of nostalgia and cultural depth.

A Moving Tribute to 9/11 with "Flight of Valor"

The night will close on a particularly moving note with “Flight of Valor”, a powerful tribute to the heroes of 9/11. This emotionally charged piece honors those who perished in the Pennsylvania plane crash, with music that captures both the devastation and the enduring spirit of hope. The composition incorporates a solemn hymn, which elevates the entire performance to a heartfelt and respectful remembrance of the tragic event.

While the concert is free, donations are encouraged to keep this amazing tradition alive. As a lifelong Abilene resident, I can attest that the Paramount Theatre, located at 352 Cypress Street, is one of the best places in town to experience live music. The grandeur of the theatre, combined with the talented musicians of the Abilene Community Band, creates an atmosphere that’s nothing short of magical.
