Cam's new single, "Diane," is an answer to a classic Dolly Parton song, but is it a hit? You be the judge.

The celebrated singer-songwriter wrote "Diane" with Jeff Bhasker and Tyler Johnson, the team behind her smash hit “Burning House," for which Cam received to her first Grammy, ACM, CMA, CMT and American Music Awards nominations.

She frames the new song as a response to Parton's "Jolene," in which a married woman is addressing the woman who has become the object of her husband's affections and asking her to step off. Cam turns the conversation around, with the protagonist of her new single saying, "Oh, I promise I didn't know he was your man / I would have noticed a gold wedding band / Diane, I'd rather you hate me than not understand, oh Diane."

"It’s the apology so many spouses deserve, but never get," Cam says of "Diane," adding, "The other woman is coming forward to break the news to the wife about an affair, respecting her enough to have that hard conversation, once she realized he was married. Because everyone should be able to decide their own path in life, based on the truth. Women especially should do this for each other, since our self-worth can still be so wrapped up in our partners. And in true country fashion, I’ve set the whole raw story to upbeat music, so you can dance while you process it all.”

The serious tone of the lyrics plays against a jaunty acoustic guitar track and an instantly-addictive melody, topped off by a vocal performance from Cam that makes you want to keep on hitting repeat. "Diane" is the first taste fans have had of Cam's much-anticipated upcoming sophomore album. No further details have been released for the project.

Did You Know? "Burning House" was the most-downloaded song by a female country artist released since 2015.

Cam Tells the Story of "Diane"

Cam, "Diane" Lyrics:

Oh, I promise I didn't know he was your man / I would have noticed a gold wedding band / Diane, I'd rather you hate me than not understand, oh Diane.

You pick the time and the place, don't know how much this hurts / I gave him my heart to break, now I know he broke yours first / Lying right there in my bed while he was lying to you / Believing the words that he said, how could we be such fools?

And all those nights that he has given to me / I wish that I could give them back to you

Chorus:

Diane, I promise I didn't know he was your man / I would have noticed a gold wedding band / Diane, I'd rather you hate me than not understand, oh Diane.

You can blame me if it helps, that's what a good wife would do / But you're only cheating yourself choosing him over the truth

And all those nights that he has given to me / I wish that I could give them back to you

Repeat Chorus

And all those nights that he has given to me / I wish that I could give them back to you
